On 17th April, NEAC-INDUSTRY was delighted to host the partners of the WISTAR Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) project for the Caen Demo Event, held at Le Pavillon Caen. The event was honored by the presence of Dominique GOUTTE, Vice-President of Caen la mer and President of Caen Normandie Développement, as well as Romain Bail, Vice-President of Caen la mer and Mayor of Mairie de Ouistreham Riva-Bella.
The Proof of Demo explores the feasibility of leveraging the Canal de Caen to connect rural activities —particularly the transport of scallops from Ouistreham to the urban center of Caen. This initiative promotes regional development through sustainable, energy-efficient transportation. It underscores the strategic 15 km inland waterway connection, facilitating the delivery of freshly scallops from local fishermen to restaurants via an electric-vessel platform.

NEAC-INDUSTRY showcases key advancements & innovative approaches for sustainable logistics:
- CO₂ reduction through inland waterways as a decarbonized transport solution
- Short supply chain valorisation by scallops’ distribution
- Sanitary and regulatory monitoring to ensure compliance in multimodal delivery
- Energy monitoring systems to uphold fish safety standards
- Optimized energy management for propulsion and transport, based on scheduling, speed, and consumption goals
- Testing battery swapping concept for enhanced efficiency
CIRCOÉ co-organizing Caen Demo, Theo Delferriere, evaluates greenhouse gas reductions and measure CO₂ savings achieved through the utilization of waterways for fish distribution. Analyze and optimize the logistics chain to enhance efficiency in transshipment and cargo delivery.
Multitel, Yves de Blic, showcases temperature control and cargo tracking throughout the multimodal journey— navigation from Ouistreham to Caen, followed by last-mile delivery via cargo bike Toutenvélo Caen, ensuring efficient urban last-mile distribution.
COVENTURIS, Loïc Pecher, showcases the use of solar-powered bio boats to deliver vegetables to the city and supply local restaurants via Ghent’s waterways.
The Caen test results support the development of eco-friendly transshipment hubs in the Ruhr and Wallonia, enhancing logistics and promoting low-carbon transport.
Universität Duisburg-Essen, lead project partner: prof. Bernd Noche, Melissa Szymiczek, Jaydeep Chaukekar evaluate the concept’s adaptability in the Ruhr region, utilizing its waterways to connect rural Lower Rhine areas with the metropolitan Ruhr using a simulation model.
Sincerely thanks the restaurant owners Cyril Smet (Le Raphaël, Le Carlotta) and Stéphane Carbone (L'Espérance) for their support.
Our gratitude to the local authority’s support:
